Using your extras at the dentist shouldn't be this confusing.

If you have private health extras, dental is already part of what you're paying for. But getting the benefit out of it isn't always straightforward:

  • You're not sure which dentists are actually in-network with your fund.
  • You book, go in, and only find out there's a gap when you go to pay.
  • You assume the only way to avoid gaps is to go to a clinic your fund runs — so you do, and now you're seeing a different dentist every visit.
  • Or you just stop going, because the whole thing feels like more effort than it's worth.
We've made this simpler. My Implant Dentist is an independent Australian dental group that's a preferred provider with all the major funds, with 13 clinics across Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and regional WA. If your extras cover check-ups and cleans and you haven't used your annual limit, there's no gap — and you'll see the same dentist each time.
What that actually means

Same no-gap claiming. Different kind of clinic.

Some dental clinics are owned and run by health funds. Others, like us, are independent practices that have preferred-provider agreements with the funds. From a billing perspective, the experience is the same — you swipe your card, your fund pays us directly, and if everything's covered, you walk out with nothing to pay.

The difference is in how the clinic operates day-to-day:

You're booked with a specific dentist — and when you come back, you see the same person. They know your history, your concerns, and what you've had done.

Your plan is based on you

Your dentist recommends treatment based on what they find in your mouth and what makes clinical sense for you — not based on set fee schedules.

What's included in the no-gap visit

Your appointment covers the three items that make up a standard dental check-up:

Item 012

Comprehensive oral examination

Your dentist checks your teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues. If there's anything that needs attention, we'll explain what we've found.

Item 114

Scale and clean

Removal of plaque and tartar, a polish, and a check of your gum health. If you need a more involved clean — some people do, especially if it's been a while — your dentist will explain the options and the cost before starting.

X-rays if clinically needed

X-rays aren't taken routinely — only if your dentist identifies a clinical reason. Most extras policies cover them.

Common questions

What patients ask before booking

I currently go to a clinic owned by my health fund. If I switch to you, will I still get no-gap on my check-up?

Yes. The no-gap benefit comes from your extras cover and our preferred-provider agreement with your fund — not from fund ownership of the clinic. If your extras cover check-ups and cleans and you haven't used your annual limit, you pay no gap for the standard check-up and clean items at our clinics, the same way you would at a fund-owned clinic. We process the claim through HICAPS on the spot.

What if I want to switch to you — do I need to tell my current dentist? Do my records come across?

You don't need to tell your current dentist anything. If you'd like your records transferred, let us know at your first visit — we'll send a records request on your behalf, they send the file, done. You don't have to do the paperwork yourself.

Is there actually a catch with the no-gap offer?

No catch, but there's a boundary. The no-gap offer covers the standard check-up and clean — examination, scale and clean, and any clinically necessary x-rays — for patients whose extras include these items and who haven't used their annual limit. If your dentist finds something that needs further treatment, that's a separate decision and a separate quote. You'll never be billed for something you didn't agree to in advance.

How do I know if my specific cover will work?

Two ways. One: use the fund and location checker above. Two: bring your fund card to your appointment. We'll swipe it through HICAPS before we start and tell you exactly what's covered. If there's any out-of-pocket, you'll know before we begin.

What if it's been years since my last clean? Will I need a deeper clean instead?

Possibly. If there's significant tartar build-up below the gumline, your dentist may recommend a periodontal (deeper) clean — a different item number that may involve a gap fee depending on your cover. We'll explain the difference, show you what we've found, give you the exact cost, and you decide whether to proceed that day or book a follow-up.

Will you try to sell me a bunch of other treatment once I'm in the chair?

No. If your dentist identifies something that needs attention, they'll explain it and give you a written treatment plan. You take the plan home, think about it, and decide what and when. We don't do same-day pressure on elective treatment.

Will I see the same dentist each time?

Yes — that's how we're set up. You're booked with a specific dentist, and when you come back for your next appointment, you see the same person. They know your history and what you've had done. If your usual dentist is on leave, we'll tell you before you come in and you can choose to wait or see someone else.

Do I need to be a new patient to use this offer?

No. The offer applies to new and existing patients alike, provided your extras cover the relevant items and you haven't reached your annual limit with your fund.

My extras reset soon and I've still got unused limits. Can I get in before they expire?

We'll do our best. Most clinics have appointments available within 1–2 weeks, and the online booking tool shows availability across all 7 locations at once — so you can pick whichever has the earliest slot. If you're booking for multiple family members before a deadline, call us and we'll help you coordinate.

What if I don't have extras, or my cover has lapsed?

You're still welcome. We'll give you the full price before your appointment so there are no surprises. Ask us when you book.
